It's been two years since a plague turned New Yorkers into flesh-eating corpses. The city's population has dwindled to three hundred refugees on Governors Island, a former military outpost in the bay between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The survivors struggle with supply shortages and flaring tempers, but the monsters they call 'rotters' can't swim. The island isn't comfortable, but it's safe. That sense of safety is shattered when Sarge, the island's head of security, comes face to decomposing face with a rotter while on a routine patrol. There's no way for the creature to have gotten on the island. Worse is that its stone-like skin makes it remarkably tough to kill. Faced with the prospect of an evolving enemy, and desperate to find antibiotics for his dying wife, Sarge has to go into Manhattan, do some recon, forage for supplies, and get out--without drawing the attention of the millions of rotters that now roam the city.

The Last Safe Place A Zombie Novella Rob Hart 9781492839613 Books

The Last Safe Place is a really good zombie novella that manages to avoid cliches and brings something a little new to the genre. Evolving zombies. Sure Romero's Land Of The Dead had evolving zombies but these aren't the kind that start to think. These undead are gaining armor from being submerged in the water surrounding Governor's Island in New York. The author even gives a medical explanation as to why. In fact one of the creepiest moments in the book is the image of zombies underwater grasping for the feet of the hero as he swims for safety. Brrr.

Rob Hart has a very unique voice when it comes to horror. Because it's more of a noir style writing voice than the typical, almost generic, voice of some horror authors. And it works great. It might even be a new sub-genre, Zombie-Noir.

The only problem I had with the book though was that it was too short. I wish Hart had stretched the story out and expanded on a few of the relationships between characters. Especially, the rivalry between the protagonist and the previliged Reginald. Even being short though The Last Safe Place is a really good zombie story and a great introduction to Rob Hart's work.

The Last Safe Place A Zombie Novella Rob Hart 9781492839613 Books Reviews

I've followed the making of this story from Rob's online column at LitReactor. He detailed the road to publication from start to finish and I knew that I would read the story once it came out. And I was definitely not let down.

"The Last Safe Place A Zombie Novella" was exactly what I thought it would be and more. The character of Sarge is well drawn out as well as perfectly flawed in a world collapsed around him. I felt like I would make similar decisions if I was thrown into that world. He is flawed and an everyman, not a traditional "hero" and that is refreshing to see in a story, especially a genre rife with them.

I also enjoyed the human drama that coincided with the undead. Creating a sense of humanity on the island is one thing, but Rob was able to generate the human complexity of balance; whereas not everyone will play by the rules and a stab in the back is waiting just around the corner.

Overall, I thought this novella was a great read. I liked the writing style and the fact that it was a novella, not a full length novel. It was short and sweet and everything needed with the plot was well formed and detailed. I would definitely suggest this story to anyone who enjoys the zombie genre.
With zombie media reaching critical mass, it's very easy to be completely engulfed with a lot of mediocre efforts from those looking to cash in on the success of shows like the Walking Dead. Fortunately, Rob Hart eschews taking the easy way out and provides an engaging and original twist on some standard tropes in the genre. While the length is short, (I blew through this in less than hour)I found the story to be satisfying and leaving me wanting to hear more about the world I've gotten a small taste of.

On top of it all, you seriously cannot beat the price!

I definitely look forward to reading more of Rob's work and cannot recommend The Last Safe Place more.
A unique take on the zombie apocalypse, with special pickled zombies, a few cheap bus-'sploding thrills, a human element for our protagonist to negotiate (with one "Woohoo! In. Your. Face!" moment), along with all the skull splatting madness that you'd expect from the genre.

As with any book that I love, it has to have good strong characters, and there's plenty of that going on. I'd have enjoyed seeing a few of them branch out and develop further, but unfortunately with a novella there's little time and scope to do so. It also doesn't help that the genre is notorious for throwing its characters to the wolves... or to the flesh nibbling rotbags. You get the idea.

It stands alone as a novella in a well developed alternate New York (seemingly the same New York universe as the one in 'New Yorked' by the same author[?]), but there's enough happening at the end to suggest that sequels could potentially follow.
Rob Hart has crafted a very interesting zombie novella...
With about a ton or two zombie stories & novels out there, it's hard to know which ones are good and so on...
Well, I wasn't really expecting much (Since I got it for FREE!) But, after reading this short, but powerful tale I would have paid 4 or 5 times what I did (HaHa!)...And, I was pleasantly surprised!
This Is Not a simple zombie story like all the others stumbling around on ...
Rob Hart packs a whole lot of story in such a short space...
Dealing with, of course, Zombies - But, also, the Survivors fortified out on Governors Island - just outside NYC (And he gives some historical detail of the place after the story) in the harbor...about Love and People - Good & Bad! Normal humans put in an extraordinary situation and how they react & interact...
Sarge is the main character and Mr. Hart tells & shows us what he's like Now & Before...
A very neat little tale about so much more than zombies!
I heard of this novella on LitReactor, an awesome literary site Hart contributes some great stuff to. Although I enjoy everything he writes on the site, I was skeptical of his novella, and yes--because it is a zombie story. Another one.

My predictions of disappointment were checked at the door, because Rob shows from page one that this ain't your grand daddy's zombeh story. Finally, someone has dropped the assault weapons and picked up a pair of chest paddles for this dead horse. The zombies in 'The Last Safe Place' are an evolving breed, but that's not the only new direction this story has taken with the genre. I read a review that said the book has a noir feel versus simple pulp horror, and I think that's the best way to describe it. It speaks differently than most zombie slush.

My only complaint is in the editing, as there are a few typos, but this is really nitpicking. I've seen typos in books mass-published by Random House. If you're a fan of the zombie genre but tired of the recycled garbage, definitely check this one out.
