The Von Toodleburgs F Colburn Adams 9781491297810 Books

In the hands of Mark Twain or Washington Irving this could have been a very humorous book. Poe could have made it a dark drama. As it is, it is light fiction with a fairly predictable plot. There is some mild humor in the characters and their names. The seafaring side of the story which is the most exciting part has some drama even though the reader knows that our hero will win through all trials. I found it disappointing that the two main unpleasant & dishonest people did not receive their just desserts. Perhaps the author felt that doing so would mar the happy ending as they became the in-laws of the hero. There must have been a market for this sort of story in 1868 as there is apparently a sequel. It is well written and not overloaded with archaic language. Adams paints an interesting portrait of the lives of the old Dutch families along the Hudson, the social life of the Bowling Green area of New York, and a little of the financial machinations of Wall Street during the pre-civil war days of America. His description of life aboard a whaling ship is far more pleasant than most. Three stars for the predictable plot. Four for the history of a bygone era & the observations on an unchanged human nature. This review is from the free kindle edition released May 12, 2012.
